For the Sauce:

  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

For the Spaghetti:

  • 12 ounces spaghetti
  • Salt for pasta water
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving

Instructions:

Making Meatballs:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, milk, fresh parsley, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Mix all the ingredients until well combined, but avoid overmixing to keep the meatballs tender.
  3. Form the mixture into 1 to 1.5-inch meatballs and place them on a baking sheet or tray. You should get about 20-24 meatballs.
  4. In a large skillet, heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until they are browned on all sides and cooked through, which should take about 10-15 minutes. You may need to do this in batches.

Making Sauce:

  1. In a large pot or saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic. Sauté for about 3-5 minutes, or until they become translucent.
  2. Add the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. If you prefer a slightly sweeter sauce, add a tablespoon of sugar.
  3. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.

Cooking Spaghetti:

  1. While the sauce is simmering, cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions in a large pot of salted boiling water. Drain and set aside.

Bringing It All Together:

  1. Once the sauce is ready, add the cooked meatballs to the sauce and simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  2. Serve the meatballs and sauce over the cooked spaghetti. Garnish with fresh basil leaves and grated Parmesan cheese.
